“You do not have to become someone else to belong. You have to become more of yourself to lead.” — Empauher ethos
At Empauher, our academic coaching work often begins with personal statements, interview prep, or refining academic writing. But what quickly becomes clear is that the heart of this work lies not in structure or grammar, but in self-trust.
This week, I worked with a group of postgraduate students from China, all preparing to study at prestigious UK art schools. Many of them had never left their home country. As a coach, I offer them the tools to navigate new academic systems—but also the mindset to navigate themselves within those systems.
In one class, I noticed something unexpected. A student had her boyfriend sitting behind her, translating the session in real time. When I asked him to step out and give her some space, the moment felt small, but it carried weight. It revealed an assumption I’ve seen often: that challenge is something to be shielded from rather than engaged with directly. That a young woman needs someone else to guide her through discomfort, rather than being trusted to navigate it herself.
These are not just language or cultural gaps. They are questions of agency, independence, and confidence.
Later, in a group task, I told one student, “You’re the leader.” She paused and said, “Sorry, I’m not a leader.” I responded: “You are now.”
And she did it.
Moments like this remind me that academic coaching is not just about performance. It’s about presence. It’s about helping students—especially those who are neurodivergent, LGBTQIA+, or navigating cross-cultural transitions—stop waiting to feel “ready” and start showing up anyway.
You don’t have to change who you are to succeed—you just need the right space to unmask authentically.
